How to Schedule Instagram Posts (Step by Step)

Scheduling Instagram posts means you can plan your feed in advance and let them publish automatically — no phone reminders, no posting at midnight. Here's how to do it.

What you need first

To auto-publish to Instagram, you need an Instagram Business or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page. This is an Instagram requirement for any third-party scheduling tool — personal accounts can't auto-publish. Switching is free: in the Instagram app, go to Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account.

How to schedule a post

  1. Connect your Instagram account to your scheduling tool.
  2. Create your post — upload your photo, Reel, or carousel and write the caption.
  3. Pick a date and time. Aim for when your audience is most active (often lunchtime and evenings).
  4. Schedule it. The tool publishes it automatically at the chosen time.

What you can schedule

Modern tools can auto-publish:

  • Single photos
  • Carousels (multiple images)
  • Reels (video)

Stories and collab posts sometimes still require a manual step depending on the tool and Instagram's API.

A faster way

If you also post to other platforms, scheduling Instagram on its own is only half the job. With a cross-posting tool you can write your caption once and send it to Instagram and TikTok, X, LinkedIn, and the rest at the same time — each at its own ideal time.
