Twitter / X Character Counter
Count your tweet and stay under the 280-character limit. Links count as 23. Free.
X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters. Images, GIFs, videos and polls do not count toward the limit.
How X counts your characters
Free X accounts get 280 characters per post. The catch most counters miss: every link counts as exactly 23 characters, no matter how long or short the real URL is, because X wraps it in a t.co short link. This tool applies that 23-character weighting automatically. Letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, hashtags and @mentions all count as one each, but characters in scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as two.
What does not count
Images, GIFs, videos and polls are free and never eat into your 280. If you subscribe to X Premium, the cap jumps to 25,000 characters, so long-form posts are possible on paid accounts. For a normal reply or tweet, aim to leave a little room so quote-tweeters can add context.
Common questions
Do links count toward the 280 characters? Yes. Every URL counts as 23 characters even if it looks shorter, because X replaces it with a t.co wrapper.
Do hashtags and @mentions count? Yes, every visible character counts, including the # and @ symbols. Only attached media is free.
How do I post more than 280 characters? Only X Premium subscribers can, up to 25,000 characters. Free accounts are capped at 280.
