Instagram Profile Picture Size 2026

The instagram profile picture size Instagram actually requires as a minimum is 110 by 110 pixels, but that's the technical floor, not what you should upload. For a sharp result on every screen, including large, high-density phone displays, 1080 by 1080 pixels is the recommended size, with 320 by 320 as a reasonable middle-ground minimum if file size is a concern.

Reasonable minimum320 x 320 px
Recommended upload1080 x 1080 px
Displayed on mobile110 x 110 px

Checked against Instagram's current upload behavior as of July 2026. The aspect ratio is always 1:1, a perfect square, regardless of which size within that range you choose.

Instagram pfp size 2026: why the circle crop matters most

Instagram displays every profile picture as a circle, everywhere in the app, even though you upload a square image. That circle crop clips the four corners of whatever square you upload. A logo or face positioned near a corner will get cut off entirely, even if it looked fine in the square preview before you saved it. Center the important part of the image well within an imaginary circle inscribed in your square file, not just within the square's edges.

Why upload larger than the minimum

Instagram displays your profile picture small most of the time (110px on mobile), but it also appears larger in a few places, like when someone taps to view your full profile photo, and it's used as a small thumbnail in comments, Stories, and DMs across a range of sizes. A 1080x1080 upload holds up sharp across every one of those sizes; a 320x320 upload starts to look soft the moment it's displayed any larger than its native resolution, and a 110x110 upload will look visibly blurry anywhere except its smallest placement.

Quick checklist before you upload

  1. Crop to a perfect 1:1 square.
  2. Keep your logo, face, or focal point centered, safely inside a circle within that square.
  3. Export at 1080 x 1080 pixels if you have a source image that supports it.
  4. Preview it small (as it'll mostly be seen) before finalizing, not just at full size.

Video and GIF profile pictures aren't supported

Instagram's profile picture accepts static JPG and PNG images only. Some other platforms allow a short looping video as a profile image, but uploading one to Instagram simply isn't an option, so don't design a video specifically for this slot expecting it to work the way it might elsewhere. If you want motion associated with your profile, that has to live in a pinned Reel or Story Highlight instead, not the profile picture itself.

Keeping your profile picture consistent everywhere

A profile picture that's cropped correctly for Instagram's circle won't automatically look right on platforms with square or different-ratio display. Resize and re-check crops for each platform with the social media image resizer before you update your profile everywhere at once.
