How Long Should an Instagram Reel Be in 2026

Instagram Reels recorded directly in the app can now run up to 20 minutes, following Instagram's November 2025 camera update. Reels uploaded from your camera roll are capped at 15 minutes. But the number that actually matters for reach is much smaller: Instagram doesn't recommend Reels over 3 minutes to people who don't already follow you.
So the ideal instagram reel length depends on what you're optimizing for. Maximum allowed length and maximum reach are two different numbers, and chasing the first one can quietly hurt the second.

If your goal is growth rather than serving existing followers, the practical ceiling is 3 minutes, not 20.
Best Reel Duration by Goal
- Under 90 seconds: highest odds of landing on the Reels tab and reaching accounts that don't follow you yet. This is the range to default to if growth is the priority.
- 90 seconds to 3 minutes: still eligible for wider distribution, useful for a tutorial or story that needs a bit more room to land.
- 3 to 20 minutes: distribution drops off sharply outside your existing audience. Reserve this range for evergreen how-tos or content people search for directly rather than scroll into.
What Changed and Why It's Confusing
Instagram's Reels length limit has moved three times in under two years: 90 seconds, then 3 minutes in early 2025, then the 20-minute in-app recording window added in November 2025. Each increase applied to recording and editing capability, not to how Reels get distributed. That's the source of most of the confusion online: articles citing "3 minutes" and articles citing "20 minutes" are both correct, they're just answering different questions (what you're allowed to make versus what gets recommended).
Why Instagram Extended the Cap
The longer recording window exists to compete with long-form vertical video elsewhere, giving creators more editing room in-app (music, effects, an undo function) without forcing them onto a separate upload flow. It's a tool, not a target. Most accounts see no benefit from using the full 20 minutes.
