Social Media Analytics: The Metrics That Actually Matter

Social platforms drown you in numbers, but most of them don't matter. Here are the metrics worth watching and the ones to ignore.

Vanity metrics to mostly ignore

  • Follower count. A big number feels good but tells you little. An engaged audience of 2,000 beats a passive 50,000.
  • Likes. The weakest signal. Easy to give, easy to forget.

These aren't useless, but don't optimize your whole strategy around them.

Metrics that actually matter

  • Reach / impressions. How many people saw your content — the top of the funnel. Growing reach means you're attracting new eyes.
  • Saves and shares. The strongest engagement signals. People save useful content and share content that resonates. Rising saves/shares mean your content has real value.
  • Watch time / completion rate (for video). The single most important video metric. It tells you whether your content actually holds attention.
  • Profile visits and follows from a post. Shows which content turns viewers into followers.
  • Click-throughs (if you're driving traffic). The metric that connects to real business outcomes.
  • Engagement rate. Engagement relative to reach or followers — a truer measure of how much your audience cares than raw likes.

What to do with them

Look for patterns. Which posts get saved and shared? Which video formats hold attention? Then do more of what works. Analytics aren't about reporting — they're about deciding what to make next.

Track the right things in one place

When you post across several platforms, checking analytics on each gets tedious. A tool that shows your publishing performance per channel in one dashboard saves time. Posted Once tracks how your posts perform across every platform, so you can spot what works and double down. Start free →.
